The Trump administration is playing the percentages with its threat to defund the MBTA (“Federal officials push MBTA on cutting crime,” Sept. 20, Metro). Administration officials well remember Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s Ash Wednesday stand against them in Congress, defending the city as “the cradle of democracy.”
That striking image, of her with the sign of the cross on her forehead and an infant in her arms, makes it difficult to dismiss her as “woke” or radical, especially for those who claim to stand for God and family.
Add in that Boston has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, and that Wu has just humiliated the most heavily financed mayoral candidate to come along in years at the ballot box, and you recognize that she is a tough opponent for the Trump regime.
So its game is to defund the transit system in the hope of generating some crime. Then it can send in occupation forces to intimidate protesters and, with a little luck, provoke the violence it is trying to get, which can then be ruthlessly suppressed in the cherished names of God, flag, country, security, order, peace, freedom, and the good old American way!
As it happens, the people of Boston and Massachusetts were not born so recently that they do not see what is really going on.
