TikTok content creator “Tea Tyme” was allegedly livestreaming when she fatally struck a 59-year-old pedestrian crossing the road on Monday evening.
Tea Tyme, 43, was driving a 2015 Ford SUV while allegedly livestreaming when she struck and killed Darren Lucas as he crossed Sheridan Road at 33rd Street in Zion, Illinois on Nov. 3.
Lucas, a grocery store employee, was dead on arrival at a local hospital. He was killed across the street from Torres Fresh Market, where he worked.
Someone uploaded a screen recording of the livestream on Friday, Nov. 7.
Tea Tyme screamed loudly and a thud can be heard when the accident happened at 5:46 pm.
“F–k, f–k, f–k,” she said, as a child in the backseat asked “What was that?”
A woman on the livestream asked if she was okay.
“I just anthem somebody,” the content creator said. “Call y’all right back.”
Police say Tea Tyme remained at the scene and called 911 to report the accident. She is fully cooperating with the investigation.
Tea Tyme has since made her TikTok account private and deleted her bio section, which listed her residence as Zion, Illinois.
Investigators said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors in the accident.
A Reddit user watched the livestream as it happened on Monday.
“So, there’s a creator I’ve followed for years on TikTok. She goes live all the time chatting with her viewers, driving around, acting like she’s got her own reality show happening 24/7. I usually don’t think much of it. Tons of people go live while doing mundane stuff,” the user wrote.
“She was driving while talking to everyone in the chat responding to comments, looking at the screen way too much. You could clearly tell she wasn’t paying attention to the road. I remember thinking, ‘shorty please just focus, this is not safe.’
“Then suddenly, in the middle of the conversation, there was this loud thud like the car anthem something solid. Her phone jerked, the DSLR shook, and then she just froze. The look on her face was pure shock. She put the phone down, opened the door, and got out. People in the chat were confused, asking what happened. And then the live just ended.”
The Zion Police Department was made aware of the livestream video on Friday.
An investigator told Lake and McHenry County Scanner newspaper that they are looking into the newly surfaced video.
It is illegal in some states to drive while talking on the phone since it is a distraction.
Lucas’ son-in-law, Chris King, said his family appreciates the support from the community.
“He played a great role in [us] finding humor when humor is needed,” King said.
