A popular snack is facing a serious safety issue, and the FDA wants you to check your shelves. Tru Fru is recalling several of its freeze-dried chocolate-covered strawberry products after a consumer found metal in the product.
“Hard or sharp foreign objects in food may cause traumatic injury, including laceration and perforation of tissues on the mouth, tongue, throat, stomach, and intestine, as well as damage to the teeth and gums,” the recall alert explains.
The affected products were sold nationwide at major retailers, including CVS, Target, Kroger, H-E-B, and Food Lion. They include various sizes of Tru Fru Freeze Dried Strawberries in Dark & White Chocolate and the Strawberries & Crème version.
To see if you have a recalled item, check the 10-digit manufacturing code on the back. Codes beginning with specific letter-number combos like 517B, 524C, and 530D are among those flagged.
Tru Fru, LLC says no injuries have been reported so far, and the recall was prompted by a single consumer complaint. The company is working with stores to pull the products and advises anyone with a potentially contaminated item to dispose of it.
