If you’re packing for a trip, better check your beauty bag twice. TSA has officially banned certain cordless hair styling tools from being placed in checked luggage.
The ban specifically applies to cordless curling irons and flat irons that use gas cartridges or butane, as well as any spare refills. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, these items pose a safety risk when stored in cargo.
But there’s a catch: while they’re not allowed in checked bags, you can bring them in your carry-on — but only if they have a protective safety cover to prevent accidental activation.
Corded hair tools, like traditional flat irons and curling wands, are still safe to pack in both checked and carry-on luggage with no issue.
TSA stresses that these rules are not just red tape — they’re in place to keep flights safe. And while the agency has relaxed certain rules, like no longer requiring shoes-off at security, the 3.4-ounce liquid rule and restrictions on hazardous items remain in full effect.
So before you roll up to the airport, make sure your beauty routine won’t land you in trouble at security.
