An international flight had to abort takeoff at Logan Airport Tuesday after flames and smoke were seen coming from the plane as it moved down the runway.
Video footage from the YouTube channel Logan in Flight showed a flash of flames coming from the aircraft shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
“We’re about halfway down the runway when all of a sudden, there’s kind of a boom noise and a big jolt, so the plane jolts forward,” passenger Molly Furrer told NBC10 Boston. “I could feel the plane braking and then started to skid down the runway until it came to a complete stop.”
The crew of the Swiss International Air Lines flight, which was bound for Zurich, stopped the takeoff due to engine issues, according to the Federal Aviation Administration, which is investigating the incident.
“There was a problem with the right engine during takeoff,” Silvia Exer-Kuhn, a spokesperson for Swiss International Air Lines, said by email.
“The crew immediately aborted the takeoff,” Exer-Kuhn said. “The passengers were able to disembark the aircraft regularly after it had taxied back to the gate.”
Some arrivals to Logan Airport had to be paused before the plane taxied off the runway, FAA officials said.
“Investigations into the exact nature of the engine problem are currently underway,” Exer-Kuhn said. “However, depending on the problem with an engine, it is possible that a flame may be visible for a brief moment.”
There were no reports of injuries.
The 223 passengers and 13 crew members on the plane were “fine,” Exer-Kuhn said.
“We deeply regret the inconvenience caused to passengers by this incident,” she said.
