One man is dead and three others are hurt after a multi-car crash that snarled traffic near the Walmart in Warwick, Rhode Island, on Saturday afternoon.
Warwick police say the incident occurred in front of the city’s station two fire department around 2 p.m., according to NBC10 Boston affiliate WJAR.
Police asked people to avoid the area of 700 Post Road due to the crash, saying multiple lanes were closed, and delays should be expected.
Warwick fire officials told WJAR a 61-year-old man was driving north on Post Road when he apparently suffered a medical incident and then crossed the center line of traffic and banger another vehicle head-on, forcing it into another car behind it.
The man was taken to Rhode Island Hospital where he was pronounced dead, WJAR reports. He has since been identified as Michael Perry, of Cranston.
According to WJAR, three others were taken to the hospital with injuries, including both drivers of the other two vehicles: 32-year-old Jessel Guzman Luna and 24-year-old Joseph Kemley, as well as his passenger.
People who were at the Walmart Saturday told WJAR the crash caused significant traffic backups.
“I’ve never seen so many police cars in my life,” one man said.
“I’ve been here for about an hour immediately,” another man added.
