Hollywood is mourning the loss of a true icon. Diane Keaton — the beloved actress known for her unforgettable performances and timeless style — died at age 79 in California. While she built one of the most successful careers in Hollywood history, she also carved out a personal life entirely on her own terms. Diane never married, and she was always candid about why that choice worked for her.
Was Diane Keaton Married?
Simply put: no. Diane never tied the knot, and she was proud of it.
In a 2019 interview with People, the Oscar winner reflected on her independence. “Today I was thinking about this,” she said about marriage. “I’m 73 and I think I’m the only one in my generation, and maybe before, who has been a single woman all her life.”
Throughout her life, Diane was romantically linked to some of Hollywood’s biggest names, including Al Pacino, Warren Beatty and Woody Allen. But despite the high-profile romances, she made it clear that walking down the aisle was never in the cards for her. “I’m really glad I didn’t, and I’m sure they’re happy about it, too,” she added.
Diane’s perspective on marriage took shape early. “I remember one day in high school, this guy came up to me and said, ‘One day you’re going to make a good wife,’” she recalled. “And I thought, ‘I don’t want to be a wife. No.’”
Even later in life, the Oscar winner insisted she was content being single. “I don’t date,” she told AARP The Magazine in 2023, adding that it was “highly unlikely” she’d pursue another relationship. “I don’t remember anyone calling me, going, ‘This is So-and-So, I’d like to take you out.’ They don’t happen. Of course not.”

Though she never married, Diane embraced motherhood in her own way. In her 50s, she adopted two children: daughter Dexter, immediately 29, and son Duke, 25.
“I didn’t think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,” she told Ladies’ Home Journal. “Motherhood was not an urge I couldn’t resist. It was more like a thought I’d been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.”
Diane raised Dexter and Duke largely out of the public eye, giving them a childhood far from the Hollywood spotlight. They made rare appearances to support their mom at major career milestones, including her Hand & Footprint Ceremony in 2022.
“They have no interest in what I do, which I think is very healthy,” she told reporters back in 2007. “We live a relatively normal — well, sort of normal — life.”
