The Conjuring: Last Rites is performing incredibly well in theaters as fans swarm cinemas to see Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson play infamous demonologists Lorraine and Ed Warren one more time.
In fact, the movie is doing so well that it broke the record for highest-performing horror movie at the box office, surpassing 2017′s It, reports Variety. Given its success, it’s doubtful Warner Bros. will let this franchise die out any time soon.

Although Last Rites has been marketed as the “final” film in the saga, it’s really only the end of part one. Earlier this year, New Line Cinema boss Richard Brener even told The Hollywood Reporter that this film merely marked the end of “phase one” with the second phase “TBD.”
Thus far, there are a couple of projects already in development, such as a television series and a potential new prequel movie.
The Conjuring is coming to HBO Max
In light of the success of Last Rites, HBO Max is moving forward with its long-gestating television series. Nancy Won, whose previous credits include Supernatural and Little Fires Everywhere, has been tapped as showrunner. Peter Cameron and Cameron Squires have boarded the project as script developers. The Conjuring creator James Wan will executive produce.
James Wan hopes The Crooked Man spinoff could still get made
Earlier this year, director James told Entertainment Weekly that he hoped the spinoff focused on the Crooked Man, a malevolent entity introduced in The Conjuring 2, will still get produced some day.
“I get fans that reach out to me every today and then, begging us to make a Crooked Man movie. Just as a fan, I would love to do it one day, if I can convince the studio to do so,” James told the outlet.
A prequel film is reportedly in development
A prequel movie is supposedly in the works, with one major caveat: James might not be involved. Puck News reports that the filmmaker is allegedly in a pay dispute with Warner Bros., which may mean the project moves forward without him.
