Who Was Lizzie Borden?
Lizzie is best known for being accused of and standing trial for the 1892 hatchet murders of her father, Andrew Jackson Borden, and stepmother, Abby Borden.

Andrew and Abby were found dead on August 4, 1892, following a brutal hatchet attack in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts, according to Biography.com. Police quickly suspected Lizzie was responsible after she burned a dress she claimed was stained with paint shortly after the killings.

She was indicted on December 2, 1892, and the trial for the murders took place in June of that year. Lizzie didn’t take the stand in her own defense, and Biography.com reported that she fainted when lawyers shared photos of the deceased’s skulls in the courtroom.
By the end of the trial, a jury of 12 men acquitted Borden of the murders due to inconclusive evidence. No one else was ever charged in the case as of time of publication.

‘Monster’ Season 4 Is Set to Depict Lizzie Borden’s Case
Before season 3 of Monster premieres on Netflix on October 3, 2025, it was already announced that the anthology series would tackle Lizzie’s case in season 4.
“It’s a female Monster season,” Murphy told Variety about season 4 in a September 2025 interview. “It talks not just about Lizzie, but other infamous women who were branded as monsters.”

The Glee creator said that Countess Elizabeth Báthory, a Hungarian noble accused of torture and murder in the 17th century, and Aileen Wuornos, an executed serial killer, will also be part of the new season.
“There’s many different monsters that float through the season,” Murphy continued. “This has the same approach: Profiling famous women who have been labeled as one thing, and we ask the question: Really, do you think so?”
Who Is Appearing on Season 4 of ‘Monster’?
Ella Beatty has been cast as Lizzie for season 4 of Monster, according to Netflix’s Tudum. Additionally, Rebecca Hall will star as Abby Borden and Vicky Krieps will portray household maid Bridget Sullvan.
