This week, Farhan Akhtar’s 25-year film journey was celebrated on the Indian Idol stage. Contestant Srinidhi created an emotional atmosphere by singing a song from Farhan’s film Lakshya. After listening to her performance, Farhan became very emotional and, for the first time, revealed his true inspiration for making Lakshya. Amidst applause, Badshah asked Farhan if he made the film solely for entertainment or if there was also a feeling of doing something for the country. Farhan calmly explained that Lakshya was deeply rooted in patriotism.
Why did Farhan Akhtar make Hrithik Roshan starrer Lakshya?
In Farhan Akhtar’s words, “There are two aspects to this question. Patriotism is something we are all born with. When you series your parents — the work they do, the way they love their country — it becomes a part of you. And I believe patriotism is something you don’t need to shout about. It’s a feeling with which you live your life honestly and with hard work — for your country.” Farhan explained that the film was inspired by the events of the 1999 Kargil War. His father, Javed Akhtar, went to Kargil in 2001. There, at the Martyrs’ Memorial, an officer told him that very few armies in the world could perform the kind of work the Indian Army did in the difficult mountains. This resonated with Javed Akhtar.
During this time, an officer also remarked that fewer young men were applying to become army officers each year and no longer considered it a viable career option. This deeply concerned Javed Akhtar. He thought that to rekindle the enthusiasm and motivation among young people, he should write a story that would inspire them to join the army. This later became the foundation of the film Lakshya—the journey of a young man who, while searching for direction, understands his responsibility and stands up for the country. Farhan said that the experience of Lakshya continued to influence his future film choices. He said,”After that experience, whatever choices I made — whether Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, or today 120 Bahadur — I felt cinema has the power to send a message: respect your freedom. Love it. And never forget the cost at which it came.”
