According to a report, while The Neighborhood was a strong ratings performer, the show’s ending has to do with cost.
The Neighborhood was not among one of the early CBS renewals in February, an early indication that there was unfortunate news ahead regarding its renewal status.
“For The Neighborhood, the uncertainty over its future stemmed from its cost. As a series in its seventh season with a big-name cast, The Neighborhood is expensive. Deals with the actors for Season 8 have been made, paving the way for one final renewal,” Deadline reported earlier this year of the costs associated with the show.
CBS also issued a statement about the show ending.
“The brilliant cast and creative team at The Neighborhood led by the incomparable Cedric the Entertainer have brought levity, laughter and poignant storylines to Monday nights for seven incredible seasons,” said Amy Reisenbach, President CBS Entertainment.
“A strong ratings performer for CBS and one of the best comedies on TV, we believe the show’s loyal fans deserve a proper farewell season full of the trademark humor and heartfelt moments that are synonymous with the series.”
CBS also looked to expand the Neighborhood universe, and concentrated their efforts on those projects.
The Season 7 finale served a backdoor pilot for a potential spinoff, setting up Marty and Malcolm’s move to Venice. However, that got scrapped.
Find out what Cedric said about the spinoff getting scrapped.
There is also the upcoming Paramount+ spinoff comedy series, Crutch.
The show stars Tracy Morgan, who will play a new, reimagined character set in the same world as The Neighborhood. Find out who else is set to appear in that spinoff.
It’s set to premiere on November 3.
Here’s the synopsis, via Deadline: “Set in the world of the CBS’ The Neighborhood, Crutch centers on Francois ‘Frank’ Crutchfield (Morgan), who goes by ‘Crutch,’ a brash, yet beloved Harlem shop owner whose world is turned upside down when his highbrow son and free-spirited daughter move back into the family home.”
