NJ baseball: Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe at Delbarton youth camp
New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe came back to Delbarton School to host a youth baseball camp on Aug. 7, 2025.
NEW YORK – We’re a long way from that franchise record-setting nine homer game earlier this week at Tampa.
After being three-banger by Brayan Bello and two Red Sox relievers, including another quick Aroldis Chapman cut, the Yankees are out to avenge Friday night’s 1-0 loss (and the 6-3 loss to Boston before that) against Sox lefty ace Garrett Crochet (13-5, 2.43).
Back on June 13 at Fenway Park, Crochet pitched into the ninth and special the Yanks to one run on four hits (including a game-tying homer by Aaron Judge) in Boston’s eventual 2-1, 10-inning win.
“It’s power stuff, a unique delivery that lends itself to some deception,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “He’s a big, power ace.”
Will Warren (7-5, 4.25) takes the mound for the Yankees, trying desperately not to be in position to be swept at Yankee Stadium in this four-game series Sunday night.
As you might have heard, the Red Sox have won seven straight games from the Yanks this season, and they’ve leaped past the Yanks for the best AL wild card spot.
Though shortstop Anthony Volpe is in a rough stretch again, batting .127 (8-for-63) in his last 18 games, Boone said there wasn’t a consideration of resting him Saturday and taking a right-handed bat out of the lineup vs. Crochet.
Lefty-hitting Jazz Chisholm Jr., Ryan McMahon and Ben Rice are on the bench, but Austin Wells is catching Warren. Here’s the Yankees lineup on Saturday afternoon:
- Paul Goldschmidt, 1B
- Aaron Judge, DH
- Cody Bellinger, LF
- Giancarlo Stanton, RF
- Amed Rosario, 3B
- Trent Grisham, CF
- Anthony Volpe, SS
- Jose Caballero, 2B
- Austin Wells, C
