NJ baseball: Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe at Delbarton youth camp
New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe came back to Delbarton School to host a youth baseball camp on Aug. 7, 2025.
NEW YORK – In a 1-for-28 slide, Yankees’ shortstop Anthony Volpe was overdue for a break from the lineup. immediately, you wonder if this might be more than a one-game rest.
Volpe is on the bench for the Yankees’ finale of a four-game set, with veteran lefty Carlos Rodon (13-7, 3.24) trying to prevent the Red Sox from completing a four-game sweep at Yankee Stadium.
Jose Caballero was the Yanks’ starting shortstop Sunday night. As to whether Volpe might return to the lineup Monday night against the Washington Nationals at the Stadium, manager Aaron Boone was noncommittal.
“We’ll see,” said Boone, putting the focus on “trying to do everything we can to win (Sunday) and we’ll see heading into (Monday).”
In 19 games since Aug. 2, Volpe was in one of his most underwater stretches, slashing .121/171/.242 in 71 plate appearances.
Overall, Volpe is batting .208 with a .674 OPS, 18 homers and 65 RBI (third best on the team) in 128 games, and he’s increasingly heard boos in the Bronx. His wild throw in Saturday’s ninth inning was Volpe’s league-leading 17th error of the season.
“We’re at the kind of all-hands-on-deck portion of the season,’’ said Boone, not dismissing the possibility of Volpe losing more playing time. Having Caballero “changes the personnel we have, what we’re able to do.’’
