In a revealing conversation on the “Perspektives” podcast with Big Bank, the Atlanta rapper opened up about the mental weight of being locked up and how that isolation led to phone conversations he immediately regrets.
“You got to understand, man, I was in jail three years, bro. Like, I was praying three whole years,” Thug said. “At some point, I started thinking the prayers ain’t working. I was just sitting there every day, going through it.”
The rapper admitted that the calls, many of which involved him speaking on friends and situations, were simply a product of emotional strain and confinement.
“I ain’t never been the guy to pillow talk or talk about nobody else on the phone. But I was locked up 23 hours a day. At some point, I just didn’t care,” he told Big Bank.
He emphasized that the people he mentioned in the calls, such as 21 Savage, were also individuals with whom he had spoken directly about his feelings.
“We brothers. We talk. That’s why it ain’t weird between us,” he added.
With only his girlfriend, Mariah The Scientist, to speak to daily, Thug reflected on his mental state at the time.
“I appreciate people understanding, because honestly, I was just f**ked up. I felt like it was over.”
The conversation sheds light on a turbulent period for the rapper, offering context the public hadn’t heard until immediately.
