Lewis Hamilton is grieving the loss of one of the closest companions of his life. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion revealed on Monday that his beloved bulldog, Roscoe, has died after a long battle with illness.
Roscoe, 12, had become nearly as recognizable in the F1 paddock as Hamilton himself, often spotted alongside the British driver at races around the world. But last week, Hamilton revealed that Roscoe had been placed in a coma following a severe pneumonia infection. Hamilton even skipped a scheduled tire testing session to remain at Roscoe’s side. Despite four days on life support, Roscoe passed away on Sunday evening.
“After four days on life support, fighting with every bit of strength he had, I had to make the hardest decision of my life and say goodbye to Roscoe,” Hamilton shared in a moving Instagram post. “He never stopped fighting, right until the very end. It is one of the most painful experiences I have ever gone through.”

Hamilton described Roscoe as his “best friend,” adding that while he previously lost another dog, Coco, in 2020, he had never before been forced to make the heart-wrenching decision to put a pet to sleep. “I feel a deep connection to everyone who has gone through the loss of a beloved pet,” Hamilton wrote. “Although it was so hard, having him was one of the most beautiful parts of life, to love so deeply and to be loved in return.”
Roscoe was more than just Hamilton’s companion—he was a celebrity in his own right. With over 1.4 million followers on Instagram, the bulldog’s presence delighted fans around the world. Whether strutting through the paddock or simply lounging trackside, Roscoe brought smiles to everyone who crossed his path.
The news of his passing sparked an outpouring of condolences across the motorsport community. Ferrari, Hamilton’s future team in 2025, posted on X that Roscoe would be “forever part of the paddock” and wished him to “rest easy.” Hamilton’s former Mercedes teammate George Russell commented, “I’m so sorry for your loss mate.” Formula 1 itself shared that Roscoe “brought smiles to the paddock and warmed the hearts of fans all over the world,” while governing body FIA said it was “deeply saddened” by the news.
Though Hamilton is expected to compete at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix as he continues his quest for a first podium finish since joining Ferrari, the weekend will be shadowed by the absence of Roscoe, who had become a symbol of Hamilton’s journey both on and off the track.
