A plane headed from Los Angeles to Boston abandoned takeoff Sunday night after a cargo plane crossed its path on the runway “without authorization,” officials said.
American Airlines flight 2453 at LAX with 94 passengers and seven crew members “discontinued its takeoff after the crew observed another aircraft on the runway,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
The incident happened at 10:33 p.m.
“The aircraft later re-departed for BOS normally,” the statement from American Airlines said.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, “AeroLogic Flight 619 crossed a runway at Los Angeles International Airport without authorization as American Airlines Flight 2453 was taking off.”
“Air traffic control instructed the American crew to cancel their takeoff,” the FAA’s statement said.
According to the FAA, the passenger plane and the commercial aircraft came within nearly a mile of each other.
“The closest proximity of the two aircraft was approximately 5,200 feet,” the FAA said.
According to a flight tracking website, the AeroLogic flight flew in from Shanghai and landed at LAX at 10:33 p.m., nearly 90 minutes early.
AeroLogic is listed as the operator of the freighter jet, and DHL is listed as the airline, according to Flightradar24.
AeroLogic, based in Germany, is a joint venture between DHL and Lufthansa Cargo.
Neither AeroLogic nor DHL responded to requests for comment from the Boston Globe Monday night.
The American Airlines flight ended up taking off more than two hours late and landed at Boston Logan International Airport a little before 9 a.m. Monday.
“We thank our crew members for their quick action and our customers for their understanding,” American Airlines’ statement said.
