Kurukshetra X breakdown: Anu Sikka’s Netflix epic mythological drama brings back the imagination with…
Netflix’s epic animated series ‘Kurukshetra’, conceptualized and created by Anu Sikka, brings the Mahabharata to life with stunning animation by Hitech Animation. Here’s what fans say.
Following Mahavatar Narsimha’s success in both theaters and OTT, Netflix is releasing another animated film, Kurukshetra. It is based on the famous war of the Mahabharata, fought between the Kaurava and Pandava brothers. The story has been presented delicately and touches themes like family honour, greed, and revenge. The first season consists of 9 episodes, focusing on 9 key characters- Arjuna, Yudhishthira, and Abhimanyu. The second season will feature the stories of the remaining nine characters. The series’s story has been simplified to make it easier for viewers to understand. The story depicts war scenes as well as the events that lead members of the same family to become bloodthirsty for each other. The show begins with a voiceover written by Gulzar, which says, “Truth has many shades.” It depicts how the Kurukshetra War not only claimed lives but also resulted in the loss of humanity and values—and its impact is still felt today.
What is Netflix’s Kurukshetra series about?
Kurukshetra also incorporates teachings from the Bhagavad Gita, in which Krishna explains to Arjuna the meaning of dharma, karma, and duty. Kurukshetra was created by Anu Sikka, written and directed by Ujjan Ganguly. Hi-Tech Animation handled the animation, and renowned filmmaker Kaushik Ganguly is the series director. The first episode itself depicts vultures hovering over the battlefield, foreshadowing the bloodshed to come. However, the story structure is a bit convoluted—the timeline frequently changes, leaving new viewers confused and those familiar with the Mahabharata feeling incomplete.
Kurukshetra X breakdown
Kurukshetra has received mixed reactions from the people. The animation quality is certainly better than the previous film, but it doesn’t feel as vibrant compared to other Netflix animated series. The colors are too bright. The characters’ faces appear rubbery, and their eyes appear robotic. It’s the voices that bring their emotions alive. Arjuna’s curly hair and Krishna’s blue skin distinguish them. In the battle scenes, arrows kick up dust storms and elephants trample soldiers. Abhimanyu’s Chakravyuh scene is particularly impressive. The latter half of the series is more engaging, where the real lessons of the Mahabharata—human frailties and moral dilemmas—come to the fore. Kurukshetra succeeds in demonstrating such a vast and profound story.
