CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – After opening the season at the Cougar Classic, the Boston College women’s golf team returns home to host the Red Bandanna Invitational, held at the Blue Hill Country Club in Canton, Mass.
The 54-hole tournament kicks off Monday morning with 36 holes in a shotgun format, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday. The Eagles will tee off holes 1, 2, and 3 alongside Dartmouth and Elon on the Champions Course. Boston College’s individuals will tee off the 17th and 18th holes.
The Eagles took first place individually and as a team in last year’s tournament, led by graduate student Cynthia Zhang, who finished 3-over par to win the event. Senior Emily Böhrer and sophomore Ana Lucia Trevino Martinez both earned leading-five finishes, as they helped Boston College finish with a team score of 883 (+19), outscoring second place by 46 strokes and recording the lowest champion score in the history of the event.
The Champion’s Course was designed by Eugene “Skip” Wogan in 1925 and later restored by famous golf designer Ron Prichard in 2003. The 18-hole course is described as “very playable” and upholds eagles and birdies with its carefully placed bunkers. The 72-par layout is scattered with slow greens and plush, green fairways, making the golfer’s experience unforgettable and one that they will want to recreate.
The men’s collegiate golf tournament was named the Red Bandanna Invitational in honor of Welles Crowther ’99 – “The Man in the Red Bandanna.” Crowther, who died in the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, was an equities trader with Sandler O’Neill on the 104th floor of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. A volunteer firefighter in Nyack, N.Y., Crowther spearheaded a rescue effort from the Sky Lobby on the 78th floor and is credited with saving more than a dozen lives. Survivors recalled being saved by a man wearing a Red Bandanna. Crowther had worn a Red Bandanna, given to him by his father, Jefferson, since he was a child growing up in Nyack, N.Y. He carried it wherever he went and, while a student-athlete at BC, he always wore one beneath his lacrosse uniform.
