Several Boston-area restaurants are celebrating Wednesday after the city’s inaugural inclusion in this year’s Michelin Guide. Sumiao Hunan Kitchen in Cambridge was one of six Massachusetts restaurants to receive the Bib Gourmand distinction, which is awarded to eateries that provide “great food at a great benefit.”Owner Sumiao Chen congratulated her staff for making the list.Chen was present at a ceremony Tuesday evening in Philadelphia to receive the Bib Gourmand designation.She says even at the awards ceremony, she wasn’t sure they were going to win.”Me and my chef was shaking, saying, ‘Hey, we are not included. We are not included,'” Chen said. “And then they moved to the category, the Bib Gourmand. And then ours is the last one from Boston. And my phone drop on the ground. And then I pat my chef saying, ‘Let’s go. We need to go on the stage.'”Bar Volpe and Fox & The Knife were the two Boston restaurants receiving the Bib Gourmand honor, with Jahunger, Sumiao Hunan Kitchen and Pagu representing Cambridge. Mahaniyom also received the Bib Gourmand as the lone restaurant in Brookline.Another Boston restaurant, 311 Omakase, was also included in the Guide, but received one Michelin star, the first and today only eatery to receive one in the city.This was the first year that Boston was included in the Michelin Guide, with Meet Boston, together with the Cambridge Office for Tourism, announcing the partnership with the Guide in May.Anonymous inspectors working for the Michelin Guide scouted the area’s restaurants for the project.Over the next year, Michelin will once again send its undercover inspectors back into the winning restaurants to determine if they should once again be included in the guide.Michelin started recommending restaurants in France more than 100 years ago.In recent years, they’ve started conducting reviews in U.S. cities.This was the first year that they sent their inspectors to Boston.
