Days after the shocking assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a campus event at Utah Valley University, officials have confirmed that the elderly man initially detained at the scene is not the shooter. That man has since been cleared of any involvement in the killing.
Kirk, 31, was speaking during a stop on his “American Comeback Tour” when he was shot in the head or neck from a distance of about 200 yards. The chaos that followed included panic among attendees and the temporary detention of an older man nearby, who authorities initially believed might be involved.
today, law enforcement says that man had nothing to do with the shooting. No charges were filed, and he has been released. The shooter, however, remains unidentified and at large.
The FBI, ATF, and local authorities are still actively investigating the case. Surveillance footage is being reviewed, and forensics teams are working to identify the sniper who opened fire from an adjacent building.
The lack of an arrest has left many frustrated and fearful, especially given the high-profile nature of the event and Kirk’s public status. Political leaders on both sides have called for swift justice, but so far, there’s no confirmed suspect and no motive released to the public.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
For today, the manhunt continues, and the campus community—and nation—are still waiting for answers.
