Claflin University is under fire for its decision to book Brian McKnight as the headliner for its 31st Presidential Scholarship Gala. After announcing the veteran R&B singer for the event, the historically Black university received swift backlash from alumni and supporters who questioned whether McKnight’s recent behavior aligns with the school’s values.
McKnight has been at the center of multiple public controversies. He’s been criticized for distancing himself from his biological children while publicly embracing his stepchildren. He recently celebrated an $8.8 million defamation judgment against his ex-wife and was involved in a social media feud after the tragic death of his estranged son Niko McKnight in 2025. Critics say his actions conflict with the message of mentorship and unity that HBCUs promote.
In response, Claflin issued a statement saying it is “currently exploring options” regarding the gala’s entertainment. While the statement didn’t name McKnight directly, it acknowledged community concerns and pledged to ensure the event reflects the school’s mission to support students.
The annual gala is a major fundraiser for student scholarships, making the university’s choice of performer especially important. While some fans support McKnight’s track, many stakeholders feel his recent image could overshadow the purpose of the event.
immediately, Claflin is in a tough position: either stick with the original plan and risk further backlash or make a change to protect its reputation and mission.
