Dominic Cooper is leading ITV drama Adultery from Ben Stephenson’s Poison Pen Studios and Danny Brocklehurst.
Cooper will play Tom opposite Romola Garai’s Beth, two people who share an immediate, intense connection. The show first introduces the audience to Tom’s 15-year-old daughter Jess who has found love with schoolmate Ollie, and they can’t take their hands off one another, as love’s young dream becomes all consuming. When Tom meets Beth in the most unexpected of circumstances, the two families’ lives are potentially turned upside down forever. The “provocative love story raises questions about class, grief and the effects of social media,” ITV said.
Landing Cooper and Garai is big for ITV. Cooper is the star of Mamma Mia! and The Gold while Garai recently won an Olivier Award for her performance in The Years.
Deadline revealed Adultery several months back and it has also cast Shelley Conn (Gen V, Bridgerton) as Tom’s wife Hannah, and Matthew McNulty (Domina, Deadwater Fell) as Beth’s husband Neil. And it introduces rising star Johnny Sanpher and Leila Khan (Heartstopper, Crookhaven), who will play the teenage lovers.
Stephenson said: “I am thrilled that we have assembled such a high calibre cast for Danny’s wonderful scripts. Dominic and Romola are two remarkable actors at the peak of their careers and it’s hugely exciting to see what they bring to this juicy gripping and complex show alongside their amazing co leads Matthew and Shelley.”
Stephenson’s ITV Studios-backed Poison Pen has landed two ITV shows so far, Adultery and The Dark, which will be led by Laura Donnelly. Ex-Bad Robot TV boss Stephenson recently spoke to us about how he wants to twist the mainstream with his drama indie.
Adultery is created and written by Brocklehurst. Will Sinclair will direct episodes 1-3, and Daniel O’Hara will direct episodes 4-6 with Sarah Lewis as series producer. Stephenson, Preethi Mavahalli and Luke Woellhaf executive produce for Poison Pen, alongside Brocklehurst and Polly Hill for ITV. Adultery is produced in association with ITV Studios, which will also distribute the series internationally.
