A go-to spot ice cream spot for generations of Boston College students is closing after more than four decades and will be replaced by a popular local chain.
White Mountain Creamery in Chestnut Hill will permanently shut down “after 45 incredible years” by the week of Nov. 23, the family-run establishment wrote in its website. New City Microcreamery, will assume management and operations of the shop starting Monday, Dec. 1.
“One of our leading priorities prior to departing was to make sure the tradition established by the White Mountain Creamery will continue,” owner Peter Coufos wrote. “It took the better part of the past year vetting a number candidates and we believe we found the perfect one in New City Microcreamery! Thus our departure will allow for an exciting new beginning.”
New City Microcreamery is an award-winning ice cream brand with roots in Central Massachusetts. The chain’s ice cream is made extra smooth from the company’s liquid nitrogen freezing method. The popular ice cream comes in many flavors, including Salted Cookies & Cream, Baklava and Mint Chocolate Chip. New City has scoop shops in Hudson, Sudbury, Cambridge and Arlington.
“From the very start, we were amazed by the NewCity experience; in the quality of their products, their culture and dedication to achieving the very best customer experience. That’s why we’re genuinely excited to movie this new chapter unfold,” Coufos wrote. “This is the start of an exciting new chapter in our community, so please come on by and be a part of it!”
White Mountain Creamery, located across from Boston College’s Lower Campus, opened in 1983, the shop’s website states. Coufos bought the business in 1993, The Heights reported. The owner also expressed gratitude for the community for supporting his business for so long.
“Finally and most importantly we want to thank you, our customers for your patronage over the past 45 years,” he wrote on White Mountain Creamery’s website. “It’s been our pleasure and honor to serve you. Here’s wishing you all the very best.”
White Mountain Creamery, and the soon-to-open New City Microcreamery, is located at 19 Commonwealth Ave., Chestnut Hill.
