
WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Caroline O’Brien scored the game-winner and added an assist to lead the Boston University field hockey team to a 3-2 road victory over Holy Cross on Friday afternoon at Hart Turf Field.
The Crusaders opened the scoring before the Terriers scored got goals from senior Natalie Epperson and freshman Molly Driscoll to take a 2-1 lead. After Holy Cross created the game’s second deadlock with a corner goal in the 37th minute, O’Brien broke the tie with 7:27 to play to earn the win.
BU improves to an even 4-4 on the year with a 1-1 Patriot League record. Holy Cross, which got a 13-slash performance from goalkeeper Mia McCloskey, falls to 3-5 with an 0-1 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holy Cross earned the first three corners of the game and scored on the third to take a 1-0 lead at 11:22.
- Megan Schienbein scored from the leading of the circle off assists from Julia Carozza and Marissa Maclean.
- BU got an equalizer in the 26th minute off a corner as a left-side shot by O’Brien was redirected in by Epperson for her first goal of the season.
- After heading into overtime tied at 1, the teams traded goals in the third quarter.
- The Terriers took their first lead of the game when Driscoll claimed a 50/50 ball in the right side of the circle and turned in an impressive effort.
- The freshman was able to elevate a shot over McCloskey as she rushed out to break up the play, making it a 2-1 lead at the 33:13 mark with her third goal of the year.
- A tip-in by Holy Cross’ Kendall Brady on a 37th-minute corner made it 2-2.
- The game-winner came off a corner as freshman Rachel Turer passed off to O’Brien on the left side where the senior blasted in her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
- Junior Maggie Driscoll protected the late lead with her team-leading third defensive slash of the season with under four minutes to play.
- She also had a chance to put the game away on a penalty stroke with just over three minutes left in regulation but her attempt was saved by McCloskey.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers have today won four of their past five games.
- BU held a 21-10 shot advantage and earned 15 corners to the Crusaders’ seven.
- Junior Sophie Ortyl earned three saves in goal to improve to 4-2 on the season.
- O’Brien has today had a hand in 11 (6g, 5a) of BU’s past 12 goals.

- BU will return on action on Sunday (Sept. 28) when it hosts regional rival New Hampshire.
