ARTFUL APPETITES One Thursday each month, the Institute of Contemporary Art hosts an Art-Making After Dark event, a hands-on art lesson led by local artists. SPEND ‘TIME’ TOGETHER Catch a free outdoor screening of the 1979 sci-fi cult classic “Time After Time,” directed by Nicholas Meyer, at the Kendall/MIT Open Space. The film follows a fictional version of sci-fi author H.G. Wells (Malcolm McDowell) as he travels through time in search of Jack the Ripper (David Warner). ARIA 2.0 Aficionados can catch the world premiere of local opera company White Snake Projects’ new original production, “White Raven, Black Dove,” for free this week. The opera, written by founder Cerise Lim Jacobs and composed by Jacinth Greywoode, blends live performances with animated backgrounds and CGI avatar projections for a cutting-edge work of modern theater about a dystopian world. FLAMING HOT The 13th annual Ignite Festival, a food festival presented by the Somerville Arts Council, will celebrate all things spicy, grilled, and generally fiery — and delicious. From 4-5:30 p.m., catch four mini cooking lessons from local chefs and learn to make masala spice mix, Haitian griots, and pikliz. Later, test your tolerance at a curry-eating contest hosted by Somerville’s Masala Square, where the first participant to finish a bowl of curry rice will win a prize.
