EXCLUSIVE: The much-anticipated adaptation of Johanna Hedman’s popular pick ‘The Trio‘ has added a heavyweight partner. We brought you the news the series adaptation was underway for European streamer SkyShowtime. The up-to-date is that German public broadcaster ZDF has come on board as a coproduction partner and will air the show on home turf and German-speaking territories.
ZDF joins the previously announced roster of SF Studios, Night Train Media (NTM), SVT and Film Stockholm as a producer. The offer was struck by NTM and its distribution house Eccho Rights is handling global sales in the countries not covered by SkyShowtime and ZDF. Eccho is here in Cannes at MIPCOM pre-selling the series.
The series will run to six instalments. Based on the novel ‘The Trio’ – aka ‘Trion’ – it is a tale of love, sex and passion. It follows middle-aged Hugo. When he is approached by the daughter of both of his childhood loves, he is thrown back in time to a moment when his younger self is about to start university.
August Wittgenstein (The Crown), Felix Sandman (Sommartider), Seth Manteus (Cherries) and Rebecka Harper star. Anders Hazelius will direct from Veronica Zacco’s script. Production started last month.
“Since announcing The Trio, interest was immediate, with international partners captured by the unique story and demonstrably strong IP of Johanna Hedman’s novel,” said Herbert Kloiber, CEO, NTM and Eccho Rights. “We’re delighted that ZDF has come on board as co-production partner and broadcaster – a fantastic endorsement of the series’ cross-border appeal.”
Trion was Hedman’s debut novel. First published in 2021, it made waves in international publishing circles with U.S. publisher, Europa Editions, snaping up the rights to the English language version of the book before the original was released.
