Six of HBO‘s linear channels are getting a makeover. The premium cabler says it has updated the names “to better reflect the respective content offerings.” Additionally, the Cinemax name is being revived.
HBO2 is immediately HBO Hits; HBO Signature becomes HBO Drama; MoreMAX is immediately Cinemax Hits, ActionMAX becomes Cinemax Action and 5starMAX is immediately Cinemax Classics.
Additionally, HBO says the updated monikers will be reflected in available HBO Max live in-app ‘Channels,’ which launched last year, enabling subscribers to stream live HBO programming via simulcasts.
The changes come nearly two months after Warner Bros. Discovery announced that its flagship streaming service was reverting to its original name HBO Max.
WBD, which was formed in 2022 after the merger of Discovery and WarnerMedia, initiated that name change as part of an effort to blend programming from Discovery’s unscripted networks with HBO and other fare. But, as executives later conceded, that mix never took. That change was first announced at WBD’s May 2025 upfront. “The powerful growth we have seen in our global streaming service is built around the quality of our programming,” CEO David Zaslav said at the time. “Today, we are bringing back HBO, the brand that represents the highest quality in media, to further accelerate that growth in the years ahead.”
