The internet exploded with talks about Ice Cube’s extremely unexpected cameo in a Minecraft advertisement. The legendary rapper and actor graced with his presence in a short clip for the promotion of the game’s new feature, #CubeClaim, a sort of mishap send-in for a chance to be featured, and people HAVE OPINIONS.

The video shows Ice Cube sitting at his desk, working the corporate shill angle by describing boringly the task of “ensuring your cubes” after accidents in Minecraft. It was so awkward that it became funny. The whole world just went wild with this one:
Adding yet another pinch, another fan said, “He acts better in this one minute than he does the entirety of War of the Worlds.” Really? That movie did leave some deep scars on many more commenters, some of whom again bashed it. Another ruthless comment read, “No way he cried harder to dying in Minecraft than his son dying in War of The Worlds.”
The unexpected Ice Cube doing Minecraft content gave some users imagery of space-time kink: “Imagina viajar al pasado y mostrar a ICE CUBE de 1990s NWA era this video,” said one Spanish-speaking fan (translation: “Imagine traveling to the past and showing 1990s NWA-era Ice Cube this video”). From here, the hilarity in the comments started, with people randomly switching languages mid-sentence.
Of course, the name of Cube and references to “It Was a Good Day” were thrown out ironically a couple of times, some asked, “Is this a good day?” with one replying, “Can’t believe, today was a good day.” The cultural relevance of “It Was a Good Day” cannot be matched at all.
Fans began speculating as to Cube’s motives, one commenting, “Bro needed some money after his movie flopped lol,” while another added, “guy really needs a bag.” Meanwhile, the gamer crowd had a big smile on there faces because of the crossover: “We got Ice Cube in Minecraft before GTA VI” was a solid TL;DR for the jumble of emotions fostered by this collab.
But maybe the charm of the video is the total unawareness of what’s going on. Ice Cube—the originator of gangsta rap, the cool star of Friday—earnestly telling Minecraft players to submit their cube claims. It just shouldn’t work. And weirdly, it does. Maybe because this guy knows after decades in this biz that whenever you give people crap to talk about, they end up marketing it for you.
Between the War of the Worlds jokes, the multilingual madness, and just the appreciation for randomness, this might probably be the most entertaining thing developed from Minecraft in years. And who knows? Maybe the Ice Cube Minecraft movie cameo might also be real. “Ice Cube in Minecraft Movie 2 would be awesome,” one fan already suggested.

By far, this falls into the weird and unexpected mash-ups that make the internet such a fun place when worlds collide in ways nobody ever foresaw and everybody just goes with it. It really was a good day.
