Brrrr! With autumn arriving, there’s an unmistakable chill in the air, but before you get cosy for sofa season immediately is a great time to plan your autumn skincare.
I don’t know about you, but as soon as the temperature drops, my skin is almost crying out for some TLC after a summer of trying to enjoy as much sun and sea as I can. With colder days (and nights) approaching and more time at home on the cards, why not rejig your routine before you decide on the hair and nail trends that you’ll be wearing this season.
If you need some inspo, here are the autumn skincare must-haves that I’m adding to my routine and the summer alternatives that I’m switching out.
Out: Dewy moisturisers
In: Rich moisturisers
As mentioned, my poor skin really doesn’t cope with the change in temperature and it gets colder I need a heavy lifting moisturiser to avoid looking dry and ashy. While light, dewy moisturisers can see me through the summer months, when autumn hits I break out the big guns. Some of my favourites include Tatcha The Silk Cream – a great alternative to my summer go-to The Dewy Cream – and Dr Althea 147 Barrier Cream, which is packed with barrier-protecting ceramides and seven types of hyaluronic acid for hydrating dry skin. If you’re not a dry skin type, don’t worry, oily and combination skin types can also benefit from richer moisturisers too. Try Dr Sam’s Flawless Moisturiser Intense, a nourishing, quick-absorbing formula with a mattifying finish.
Out: Shiny skin
In: Lightweight lotions
Don’t get me wrong, I love showing off as much skin as possible while the weather allows – but with the days of wall-to-wall sunshine becoming less frequent, soon we’ll all be covered up with layers of clothes. With no need for adding a healthy sheen to my limbs, for autumn, I prefer a lightweight lotion that will keep my body nourished without adding unnecessary glow that won’t be seen. Vaseline Gluta-Hya Serum Burst Lotions are great for using all year round as they’re both super hydrating and immediately absorbed.
Out: No sun protection
In: SPF all year round
For those who love to avoid the sun, autumn is met with a sigh of relief. Don’t be mistaken though, SPF is non-negotiable in your skincare routine and should be applied all year long. Around this time of year, I prefer a more lightweight SPF that melts into the skin like Simple Invisible UV Fluid SPF50 or Herbar The Sun Shield SPF 30. Sun protection covered with a texture that feels appropriate for autumn.
Out: Lip plumping
In: Lip care
As a lip product lover, I’ve always got tubes of lip glosses, oils and plumping products in my bag or on my person. While plump, juicy lips were on the moodboard for summer, to avoid chapped lips caused by the cold weather, lip masks are essential. Fans of Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask can celebrate, a new release with the same nourishing formula but tastes just like Strawberry Shortcake has joined the line-up. Or Dr Jart+ Vital Hydra Solution Hydrating Lip Mask comes in a cute teddy bear-shaped container and delivers a jelly glaze for instant hydration. Both great for overnight nourishment, don’t forget to have a lip care product handy for on-the-go – look no further than Violette_Fr Balm Amour.
Out: Over exfoliating
