TORONTO — Injured Red Sox pitcher Dustin May will throw another live batting practice Friday.
“Then we’ll go from there,” manager Alex Cora said Thursday before Boston’s series finale against the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre.
May threw his first live BP on Tuesday in Fort Myers. He is attempting to return for the postseason. He has been on the 15-day injured list since Sept. 9 due to right elbow neuritis.
If he’s healthy and ready to go, the Red Sox will need to make a decision on whether they want the 28-year-old on their postseason roster. May struggled after Boston acquired him from the Dodgers at the trade deadline, posting a 5.40 ERA in six outings (five starts) before landing on the IL.
Boston has eight left-handed pitchers on their current active roster. May might be able to help as a right-hander out of the pen during the postseason.
He’s averaged 94.8 mph with his fastball this season, and there’s a chance for an increase in velocity if he works shorter outings.
Kyle Harrison will start for Boston on Friday against the Tigers at home. Rookie Connelly Early is scheduled to start Saturday.
Both young lefties could be used as potential relievers during the postseason, Cora said.
Lucas Giolito will pitch Sunday only if the Red Sox have not yet clinched a postseason spot.
