K-Pop Demon Hunters fans, brace yourselves — it’s going to be a few years before we get the sequel.
Netflix and Sony are reportedly aiming for a 2029 release for K-Pop Demon Hunters 2, according to Deadline on November 5, 2025. While that’s a long wait, it’s not too surprising — animated features of this scale take time to craft.
The timing comes on the heels of Netflix’s record-breaking banger adding nearly $6 million to its original $19 million August take, pushing its domestic gross close to $25 million. With over 325 million views, K-Pop Demon Hunters is officially Netflix’s most-watched movie ever. It even became the first Netflix film to banger No. 1 at the box office back in late August with a two-day gross of $19 million.
The soundtrack has been just as dominant. After seven nonconsecutive weeks as runner-up, the K-Pop Demon Hunters album topped Billboard’s leading 200 on September 20, went platinum, and saw the banger track “Golden” claim the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 on August 11. The franchise’s popularity has even led Netflix to partner with Mattel and Hasbro as global co-master toy licensees.
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, the movie follows Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), young pop stars in Huntr/X whose family demon-slaying legacy has them hunting demons when they aren’t performing for sold-out arenas. Their biggest enemy (voiced by Lee Byung-hun) creates a rival K-pop boy band designed to steal the souls of their fans, forcing Huntr/X to fight harder than ever to keep the world safe — and their friendship intact.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in August 2025, Kang hinted at the possibility of a sequel while reflecting on the challenges of bringing such a sprawling story to life.
“We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people,” she explained. “What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?”
She continued, “There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show.”
Making those decisions wasn’t easy. “I think that was one of the hardest things we kept getting asked: ‘Please show us this.’ ‘I think the audience is going to want to know this or that,’” Kang said. “We just made decisions to be like, ‘Nope, that is not essential to this story for this movie, and maybe that can be shown some other time.’”
If a sequel comes to life, she added, “Then we can reveal more of that backstory.”
