BTS leader Kim Namjoon, who is commonly referred to as RM, has spoken about his military career, his connection with the group, and how he wants to be remembered by the fans. In a sit-down with Harper’s Bazaar Korea, Namjoon reminisced about how his childhood ambitions were similar to his present-day life. When pressed if he has ever been impressed with himself, Namjoon grinned and confessed, “I feel most impressive when a song comes out well. I was like this even as a child.” He labeled himself an attention seeker since childhood, noting that in his childhood days, he was known by the nickname Talk Box due to his fondness for narrating stories found on the internet. I liked speaking in public, making people laugh, and presenting. I even used to want to be a comedian,” he said. “That need for attention hasn’t actually changed.
And in terms of his legacy, Namjoon wishes for fans to remember him as “just a real person.” He explained, “It has been 12 years since my debut. Previously, I wanted to be perceived as cute, cool, or intelligent. Currently, I just want to do things at my own pace and direction. It is difficult to do that nowadays, but I wish to be someone who gives people the feeling of being comforted. When queried if there is something he has never told fans, Namjoon responded, “We’ve experienced a lot of highs and lows, but we trust and believe in each other. Our fans are BTS’s biggest strength.”
Namjoon also shared about his military experience, rememberingthat playing the saxophone made life there more enjoyable. “When I was a corporal, I played my best. That was my peak,” he chuckled, even confessing that after leaving the military, some said he wasn’t so good at it.
Speaking about his members—Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, Taehyung, and Jungkook- Namjoon shared that they keep telling him, “Don’t do anything, just rest, we’ll handle it,” which he finds moving but sad. His own messages to them have mellowed as well, immediately usually asking, “Aren’t you tired?” or “Aren’t you coming today?”
BTS is immediately gearing up for their first album in four years, which will be released next spring. It will be their first group effort since Proof in 2022, a highly anticipated comeback for the worldwide superstars.
