A rideshare driver accused of raping a passenger in Somerville, Massachusetts, has been arrested.
The Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office said Monday that the Lyft driver, identified as 27-year-old Luis Carlos Ramos Teixeira of Brockton, was arrested Sunday.
Police in Somerville spoke with an adult woman at a hospital Friday after she disclosed she had been sexually assaulted. Authorities identified Teixeira as the suspect.
Teixeira is accused of picking the woman up at a location in Boston, bringing her to her home in Somerville.
He allegedly assaulted the woman in the backseat of the car when they arrived.
“The behavior described is reprehensible and has no place in the Lyft community or society,” a Lyft spokesperson said in a statement Monday. “We have been in touch with the rider to offer support, have permanently banned the driver from the Lyft platform, and stand ready to assist law enforcement with their investigation.”
Teixeira was taken into custody on a warrant Sunday in Brockton.
Prosecutors said he was arraigned Monday in Somerville District Court on charges of rape and indecent assault and battery on a person over 14. He was ordered held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing Friday.
It was not immediately clear if Teixeira had an attorney.
