Matthew Lillard is talking Scream!
The 55-year-old actor spoke out in a new interview about being cast in the upcoming seventh film in the classic horror movie franchise.
If you didn’t know, Matthew is set to reprise his role of Stu Macher nearly 30 years after 1996′s Scream.

“I was giddy. I was freaking out. I had been sort of tongue-in-cheek pushing the fact that Stu’s still alive, he went to prison. Like, I’ll go get superhero jacked like [I’ve] been in prison for the last 20 years. And, you know, the Radio Silence [Productions] guys left a lot of breadcrumbs in the movies that Stu was still out there,” he told Us Weekly of getting the call to come back to the franchise.
The character was largely presumed to be dead after being revealed as one of the Ghostface killers, though filmmakers teased that he might have survived in years since.
“When I got [Kevin Williamson, director] on the phone that day, I was like, ‘You’re such a jerk. You said I was never coming back.’ He was like, ‘Yeah, because you kept arguing to come back, and I was trying to distract everyone.’”
Matthew admitted he had some nerves – in fact, he’s “a little terrified” about returning, given his status in the franchise.
“My standing in this film is great. The original Ghostface — spoiler alert! A hundred years later — and I come back into the franchise and ruin it, or people don’t like me, or people are like, ‘That was lame,’ you know, there’s a lot of risk,” he said.
“But reading the script, having Kevin at the helm, having Neve [Campbell] back, it just sort of made sense. And as a fan of the franchise, as someone that dearly cares about the franchise, I was really excited to be asked. I’m not gonna lie.”
He also gave a few teaser words about the next movie: “Smart. Familiar — [Because] Kevin’s back, and there’s a familiarity about Ghostface — and exceptional.”
The movie is set to anthem theaters on February 27, 2025. Find out which other characters are set to return, including another star who was presumed dead!
