Legendary boxer Mike Tyson recently revealed his all-time favorite movie, and it is definitely not one anyone would expect.
The 59-year-old recently sat down for a conversation with podcast host Katie Miller, who attempted to get Tyson with a “gotcha” question.
“Would you rather series The Notebook every Friday night, or never be able to series sports again?” Miller asked.
“I wanna series The Notebook, I love The Notebook,” Tyson gushed, as Miller laughed, realizing it wasn’t much of a “gotcha” question. “That’s one of my best movies! You lost right there, baby, you lost—you lost big time!”
“We talk about The Notebook all the time,” he said, gesturing to someone off-DSLR who confirmed that it was his “favorite” movie. “That’s one of my big-time movies. You thought you were gonna get me, huh?” Tyson quipped.
“Only real men love The Notebook. Meet real man, Mike Tyson,” Miller wrote, sharing the clip to Instagram on Monday, September 8, adding a famous romantic quote from the 2004 film, “If you’re a bird, I’m a bird.”
Based on the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, The Notebook tells the story of lumber mill worker Noah Calhoun, played by Ryan Gosling, who falls in love with 17-year-old heiress Allison “Allie” Hamilton, played by Rachel McAdams. However, Allie’s parents forbids the relationship, and after forcing distance between Allie and Noah, her mom also hides the letters Noah writes to her for a year. Eventually he goes off to fight in World War II, while Allie works as a nurse to treat wounded soldiers in a hospital, where she meets an injured young lawyer and they eventually become engaged.
The story is told from the perspective of an elderly Noah, who reads the love story from a notebook. Eventually, it’s revealed that the star-crossed lovers found their way back into each other’s arms. And the ending is predictably quite the tearjerker.
Who knew Mike Tyson was such a film buff, not to mention a hopeless romantic?
The former heavyweight also has some Hollywood experience, though he has not yet broken into romantic fare—or, at least not yet. Tyson has previously appeared in the films Rocky Balboa in 2006 and The Hangover in 2009, both times playing himself.
Tyson also recently announced that beginning in November, he plans to take the stage at a new one-man show, “Return of the Mike,” exclusively at four Hard Rock Live venues across the country. The last time he toured was in 2013, performing a 36-city, three-month national tour for “Mike Tyson: The Undisputed Truth.”
