BOSTON – Mike Morgan has joined the Boston University men’s lacrosse program as an assistant coach, head coach Ryan Polley announced on Wednesday.
Morgan arrives at BU after spending last season as an assistant coach at Tufts, where he helped guide the Jumbos to a 23-0 season and a Division III national title. Prior to Tufts, Morgan was the head coach at Merrimack, his alma mater, for 17 seasons (2008-24). He led the Warriors to back-to-back Division II national championships in 2018 and 2019 before overseeing the program’s transition to the Division I level beginning with the 2020 season.
“I’m excited to welcome Coach Morgan to our program,” Polley said. “To be able to add someone with Mike’s experience and coaching pedigree will be a tremendous benefit to our student-athletes and staff. Mike is a three-time national champion who has proven himself as a terrific recruiter and has developed some outstanding players during his career. I’m looking forward to Mike helping us compete for Patriot League titles.”
Last season as part of the Division III Region 1 Coaching Staff of the Year, Tufts, Morgan coached 12 All-Americans across multiple positions during the Jumbos’ record-setting campaign. Jack Regnery was named Division III National Player and Attackman of the Year while Ben Frisoli was the Division III LSM of the Year.
During his 17-year tenure as head coach, Morgan compiled a 189-73 (.721) record across all divisions; that .721 win percentage ranks 14th all-time among all active head coaches who have coached at least 10 seasons. The fastest head coach to win 50 games in NCAA history, Morgan was the 2017 USILA Division II Coach of the Year and won at least 11 games in every season from 2008-19. Morgan guided the Warriors to six NCAA Tournament appearances, reaching the national semifinals all six times. From 2008-19, Morgan owned a 164-41 record for an impressive .800 winning percentage.
Morgan coached and developed three-time USILA All-American, two-time National Player and Attackman of the Year, and current PLL star Charlie Bertrand. In total, Morgan mentored 26 All-Americans, three USILA Player of the Year selections and nine New England Players of the Year. At the Division I level, Morgan led Merrimack to an America East Tournament berth in the program’s first season of postseason eligibility. Merrimack players combined for 37 first team all-conference honors and 29 second team all-conference accolades during Morgan’s time at Merrimack.
Prior to his arrival at Merrimack, Morgan served as the head lacrosse coach at St. Dominic High School for four seasons. He led the team to 38 wins in four years, the most in school history over a four-year stretch, and his teams were 24-1 against schools of comparable size. Additionally, his team GPA was ranked in the best two of the school’s athletic teams over all four years.
A 2000 graduate of Merrimack, Morgan earned All-America accolades and was named New England Player of the Year as a senior after he helped lead the Warriors to the program’s first Northeast-10 championship.
