MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 3 University of Minnesota women’s hockey team closed out opening weekend in dominant fashion, completing a series sweep of Boston College with an 11-0 victory Friday night at Ridder Arena.
After an even start to the first period, the Gophers broke through when Sydney Morrow cut into the slot and buried a pass from Abbey Murphy at 7:40. Just a few minutes later, Minnesota capitalized on the power play as Sarah Paul worked a perfect give-and-go with Emma Kreisz, hammering home her first goal in Maroon & Gold to make it 2-0.
The scoring carried into the second. Freshman Tereza Plosová tipped home a shot from Jamie Nelson for her first career goal before Murphy took over, striking twice in quick succession. First, she corralled a stretch pass from Ava Lindsay, fended off two defenders, and finished with a one-handed effort. Just over a minute later, she rifled a shot from the right circle that deflected in for her second of the night, stretching Minnesota’s lead to 5-0 after 40 minutes.
Minnesota kept pouring it on in the third. Plosová tallied her second career goal off a feed from Sienna D’Alessandro, and less than a minute later, Josefin Bouveng converted a breakaway to push the lead to seven. Morrow notched her second of the contest on an odd-man rush before Murphy completed her hat trick with a one-timer off a Bella Fanale feed, marking the third hat trick of her career. Molly Jordan added a power-play blast, and Fanale capped the scoring late in the frame to secure the 11-0 win.
Quotable
“So many good things from tonight’s win,” head coach Brad Frost said. “In the first period, we were a little individual trying to skate through players. As the game progressed we moved the puck so much better. Obviously the puck moves faster than the players and they were communicating and working together, getting pucks behind their defense and then going to work. Overall, an incredible night.”
