A naked man shot multiple times by Boston Police Officers as they said he wielded a large knife in a Beacon Hill restaurant will undergo a mental health evaluation.
Akash Kushwaha, 26, was arraigned Tuesday before Judge James Stanton in BMC Central on three counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (knife), one count of breaking and entering during the daytime to commit a felony, malicious destruction of property over $1,200, larceny from a building and indecent exposure.
Just before 6 a.m. on Sept. 24, officers went to 97 Mount Vernon St., the address for the restaurant 1928 Beacon Hill, for a report of a breaking and entering in progress, Superintendent Paul McLaughlin told reporters at the scene. There, police found a man in a rear alley armed with a large knife.
An officer used his Taser on the man but the taser did not subdue him, officials said. At that point, responding officers shot the man multiple times, McLaughlin said.
The man was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The officers involved were also taken to hospitals for evaluation, a standard procedure, according to McLaughlin.
Kushwaha is currently being held without bail at Bridgewater State Hospital to be evaluated for competency. He is due back in court on Oct. 20 for a status breakdown.
