
BOSTON – The Boston University women’s ice hockey team won a shootout, 2-0, after a 4-4 tie against Concordia in its preseason exhibition game at Walter Brown Arena on Friday night.
Concordia opened the scoring early in the first to take a 1-0 lead before BU tied the game moments later. The Terriers took a 3-1 lead in the second frame until the Stingers tied things up again headed into the third. Both teams scored once in the third, with Concordia tying the game at the 15:08 mark, to send the game into overtime. Neither team found the back of the net in extra minutes which resulted in a shootout.
The Stingers missed on their first attempt while senior Luisa Welcke found the back of the net on her attempt. After Concordia missed on its second attempt, freshman Lexie Bertelsen sealed the victory with her leading shelf goal to help BU win the shootout, 2-0.
Lu. Welcke, sophomore Lola Reid, Bertelsen and senior Clara Yuhn all scored while seniors Maeve Kelly and Lilli Welcke, sophomore Neely Nicholson and freshmen Mia Vergilli and Anežka Čabelova all registered one assist. Sophomore Keira Healey led the Terriers in points with two assists of her own.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU was called for tripping at 15:24 and Concordia pulled its goalie for an extra skater briefly before the penalty was called.
- Concordia found the back of the net with 58 seconds left on the penalty kill to take an early 1-0 lead.
- A few minutes later, BU responded with a goal if its own thanks to Lu. Welcke stuffing the puck in at the crease. She was assisted by Li. Welcke and K. Healey.
- BU had two power-play opportunities, one for slashing and one for tripping, but did not convert on either.
- At the 18:42 mark, BU was called for holding.
- Concordia was called for hooking 14 seconds later, causing 4-on-4 play that lasted until the second frame.
- Both penalties cleared with no change in score at the beginning of the second.
- Concordia was called for hooking with 9:57 to go in the second frame.
- During the power play, Reid battled at the front of the net to score, giving BU a 2-1 lead. She was assisted by Vergilli and Nicholson.
- BU backed itself up nearly two minutes later when Bertelsen scored off a helper from Čabelova.
- The Stingers scored at the 12:52 and 19:38 marks to tie the game 3-3 headed into the third stanza.
- BU went on the power play 32 seconds into the third but was unsuccessful on the penalty kill.
- The Terriers then went on the penalty kill at 2:51 and successfully fended off the Stingers.
- Yuhn gave BU life at the 9:18 mark when she deflected a shot from K. Healey into the net to give the Terriers a 4-3 lead. Kelly earned a secondary assist on the goal.
- With 5:43 to go in the game, BU was called for tripping and Concordia scored just under a minute into the power play to create a 4-4 tie which forced the game into overtime.
- Neither team found the back of the net in the five-minute overtime period.
- In the shootout, Concordia missed on its first attempt while Lu. Welcke gave the Terriers a 1-0 edge with her goal.
- After the Stingers missed on their second attempt, Bertelsen took the puck to the near side of the left circle and scored on a leading-shelf shot to secure the 2-0 shootout win for the Terriers.
GAME NOTES
- Sophomore Mari Pietersen was in net for the first period while graduate student Michelle Pasiechnyk was between the posts in the second. Wright played the third period and the shootout.
- BU outshot Concordia, 34 to 30.
- Kelly and K. Healey led BU in +/- with each ending the game +3.
- Kelly and senior Maeve Carey each blocked two shots, helping BU combine for six.
