BOSTON – Senior Caroline O’Brien had a hand in every goal, scoring twice and adding two assists to lead the Boston University field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Quinnipiac on Friday at New Balance Field.
The Terriers scored off the opening whistle and added another seven minutes later to take a lead they would not relinquish en route to their first win of the season.
Junior Nicole Lauro and freshman Molly Driscoll added goals for BU while freshman Delfi Coulo picked up her first collegiate point with an assist. Junior Sophie Ortyl earned the win in goal with a five-slash performance.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- BU scored just 13 seconds into the game as O’Brien found Lauro down the right side and the junior found open space before slotting a shot inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
- After overcoming three straight Quinnipiac corners, the Terriers doubled their lead when O’Brien hauled in a long pass in the right corner before getting around a defender to earn the end line and create room by the right post with some nifty stickwork, leading to her first goal of the season.
- The score jumped to 3-0 in BU’s favor 3:26 into the second quarter when O’Brien sent a ball to a sprawling Driscoll in the middle of the circle, where she got her stick on the ball to elevate it past QU netminder Cristina Torres for her second goal of the season.
- The Bobcats got on the board exactly three minutes later off a corner as Maaike Van Wensen drilled a shot from the left side of the circle after the Bobcats controlled a rebound off an initial slash by Ortyl.
- Neither team scored in the third quarter and the Terriers went on to earn an insurance goal at the 47:29 mark when Coulo penetrated the left circle before dribbling at the cage and elevating the ball towards the goalmouth, where O’Brien tipped it in for a 4-1 lead.
- Quinnipiac put pressure on in the late stages and added a second tally with 1:29 remaining in regulation before BU secured the victory.
