BOSTON — Pitcher Walker Buehler, who the Boston Red Sox released Friday, has signed a contract with Dave Dombrowski’s Philadelphia Phillies, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb.
Buehler needed to sign with a team by the end of today to be eligible to pitch in the postseason with his new team.
The 31-year-old righty struggled mightily for Boston after signing a one-year, $21.05 million contract last December.
He went 7-7 with a 5.40 ERA and 1.56 WHIP in 22 starts. The Sox demoted him to the bullpen seven days before they released him. In one relief appearance, he gave up two runs on two hits, one homer and one walk in 2 ⅓ innings against the Yankees.
The Phillies (79-57) are playoff bound with a six and a half game over the Mets for first place in the NL East. Buehler has had success in the postseason, including recording the final three outs of the Dodgers’ 2024 World Series championship over the Yankees. He has a 3.04 ERA in 19 outings (18 starts) in his playoff career.
