On Wednesday, Prince William announced the recipients of the Earthshot Prize at a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The award bestows 1 million British pounds on five individuals with projects dedicated to repairing the climate. When he wasn’t lending his services to help the environment, William found time to recreate a photo of his late mother, Princess Diana, on one of Rio’s highest peaks and in front of its most recognizable landmark.
Accompanied by the city’s mayor, Eduardo Paes, Prince William climbed to the best of the Corcovado mountain, where the immense Christ the Redeemer statue stands. In front of the statue sculpted by Paul Landowski in 1931, Prince William met the 15 finalists for the Earthshot Prize. Before leaving, he took a solo shot before the massive statue—a nod to Princess Diana, who took a similar photo 34 years prior.
In 1991 the Princess of Wales visited the same spot with her then husband, King Charles III, on a trip to Brazil during which they also discussed issues regarding the environment. Rather than following Charles on all of his engagements, Diana visited charities, including one dedicated to children diagnosed with HIV, and visited various landmarks. She took a solo shot in front of Christ the Redeemer and then one from behind as well, facing the balustrade overlooking the bay of Rio de Janeiro.
