Spanish TV network Movistar shared the footage (the video is geo-locked, the New York Post also recorded it). The network later hosted a press conference that allowed Rory the chance to address the incident.
A fan shared a video from the press conference on X / Twitter. In it, a reporter asked the athlete his thoughts on heckling from crowds.
In response, Rory said, “I don’t think we should ever accept that in golf. I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week. Golf … teaches you how to respect people. Sometimes this week, we didn’t see that. This should not be what is acceptable at the Ryder Cup. What happened here this week is not acceptable.”
Apart from the drink thrown at Erica, the Northern Irish golfer also experienced heckling during his pre-shot routine, prompting him to tell fans to “Shut the f— up,” via Us Weekly.
Rory continued, calling it a “rough week for all of us,” and then added that they managed to quiet the naysayers with how they played as he wound up winning his sixth Ryder Cup and Europe beat the U.S..
Last year, Rory and Erica called off their divorce.
