AMHERST, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts swimming and diving team topped Boston University in a dual meet at the Joseph R. Rogers Jr., Pool on Saturday.
Both the Minutewomen and Minutemen combined for 20 gold medals on the day.
Additionally, three Massachusetts divers had six-dive totals rank within the best-10 in program history.
Women’s Swimming & Diving
The Minutewomen totaled 26 best-three finishes on the day to go along, while collecting nine gold medals.
Freshman Flora Klimesch began the individual events with a first-place finish in the 1,000 freestyle with a personal-best time of 10:25.50.
In the 200 freestyle, junior Beren Cakiroglu swam a season-best 1:53.41 to secure the gold, while fellow classmate Diya Ackerman-Vallala grabbed the silver with a season-best time of 1:56.33. Sophomore Maria Grishaeva was second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.85.
The 100 breaststroke saw freshman Kate Baranova take first-pace with a season-best time of 1:05.49, as junior Lindsay Burbage finished close behind in second with a time of 1:05.73. Sophomore Karinne Everly (2:06.53) and Hannah Schoenauer (2:06.92) completed the 200 butterfly with season-best times to place second and third, respectively.
Sophomore Courtney Tedesco swam into second in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 23.84. Cakiroglu collected her second gold medal of the day with a season-best time of 52.00 in the 100 freestyle, while Grishaeva placed third in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 2:05.72.
Burbage also garnered her second medal of the day, placing first in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.81, as Ackerman-Vallala had a season-best time of 2:27.74 in the event to take third.
Klimesch secured her second gold medal of the afternoon after swimming a personal-best time of 5:06.91 in the 500 freestyle. Schoenauer finished third in the event with a time of 5:11.84, marking a season-best.
Everly was first in the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 56.61, followed by Tedesco in second with a personal-best time of 57.15. Grishaeva earned second in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 2:09.00.
In the relays, the 200 medley relay team of Grishaeva, Burbage, Everly and Tedesco grabbed the gold with a combined time of 1:44.68. The 400 freestyle relay team of Ackerman-Vallala, Tedesco, Everly and Cakiroglu swam a time of 3:31.96 to take second, while the team consisting of Baranova, junior Olga Stoura, Klimesch and Schoenauer finished third with a time of 3:39.94.
Men’s Swimming & Diving
The Minutemen tallied 23 best-three finishes, adding 11 gold medals on the day.
Junior Jude Boukarroum and freshman Miles Smyczek kicked off the individual events with a first- and second-place finish, respectively, in the 1,000 freestyle. Boukarroum had a season-best time of 9:45.42, while Smyczek had a season-best time of 9:50.79.
Senior Sammy Quigg grabbed the gold medal in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:40.92. Sophomore Zach Szabo took first in the 100 backstroke with a season-best time of 49.82, while freshman Liam Hickey was third with a time of 51.22.
Freshmen Hudson Bawduniak (56.45) and Eli Panachyda (57.28) finished first and second, respectively, with season-best times. Junior Aydin Erkan was third in the 200 butterfly with a time of 29.44 and Quigg took first in the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.66.
Freshman Macek Vandermolen swam a time of 46.37 in the 100 freestyle to collect the gold, while Hickey grabbed the silver in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 1:50.75. Panachyda had a season-best time of 2:06.14 in the 200 breaststroke to finish first, as freshman Chase Dai followed in third with a season-best time of 2:08.58.
The 500 freestyle saw Boukarroum swim into second with season-best mark of 4:43.63. Bawduniak finished the 100 butterfly with a season-best time of 50.86 to place second, and sophomore Chase Keeler secured the gold in the 200 individual medley with a season-best time of 1:54.17.
During the relay events, the team of Szabo, Bawduniak, Hickey and Quigg swam a combined time of 1:32.18 to place second in the 200 medley relay. The 400 freestyle relay team consisting of Quigg, Vandermolen, junior Aidan Shepston and junior Alonso Montoru swam into first with a combined time of 3:03.98. The team of Hickey, freshman Sota Kawahata, Szabo and sophomore Daniel Strumidlo placed third with a time of 3:08.18.
On The Boards
In the three-meter dive, senior Shreeya Sinha claimed the gold with a personal-best score, and fourth-best total in program history, of 318.60. Sophomore Danielle Guerin placed third in the event with a six-dive total of 276.83.
The one-meter dive for the Minutewomen saw sophomore Khrystyna Yaremyn (266.85) and Guerin (263.55) take second and third, respectively.
For the Minutemen, sophomore Alex Kreidler secured first in the one-meter with a personal-best score of 353.63, while freshman Carson Harrington placed second with a personal-best total of 316.20. Kreidler’s mark today ranks third all-time, while Harrington’s score ranks 10th.
In the three-meter, Harrington claimed the gold with a personal-best, and second all-time mark of 378.15. Harrington’s score also broke a previous freshman record of 375.00 held by Jason Cook in 2009.
Kreidler took second in the event with a six-dive total of 369.53, which marked a personal-best and the fourth-best score in program history.
