The Mosesian Center for the Arts announced Wednesday that Boston Dance Theater is joining the center as a company-in-residence . The contemporary dance company’s residency establishes an ongoing collaboration with the multidisciplinary art and performance venue.
BDT, which is based in Boston but performs internationally, is the first dance company to have a long-term residence at the Mosesian Center, set to continue through 2028, according to Matt Jatkola, associate executive director of the Mosesian Center. In August 2024, Actors’ Shakespeare Project joined Mosesian as a professional theater company-in-residence. The Mosesian Center’s previous company-in-residence, New Repertory Theatre, shut down in October 2023 after four decades of operation, 18 of which were as resident of the center.
Through the dance residency, the Mosesian Center and BDT will develop and offer a new series of dance classes for teens and adults debuting in January. The class schedule includes a Fitness, Energy, and Strength course and a Creative Expression & Dance for Everyone course for beginner and intermediate dancers ages 16 and older, as well as a Signature BDT Lab for experienced dancers ages 18 and older.
The courses will be taught by BDT dancers in the Mosesian Center’s Rehearsal Hall and Red Studio.
With support from the Mosesian Center, BDT will develop new professional dance showcases for audiences in Watertown, as well as for BDT to perform while travelling.
“Our community has expressed a growing interest in dance programming and movement-based education,” said Aliana de la Guardia, executive director of the Mosesian Center, in a press release statement. “Boston Dance Theater brings world-class artistry and a vibrant creative energy that will enrich the experiences we offer to students and audiences and Watertown as a whole.”
Before she joined Mosesian as director, Guardia performed with BDT as a classical singer at the Goethe-Institut.
“I absolutely loved their work ever since,” she told the Globe over the phone. “[We want to] utilize our space in an innovative way, and [BDT] is the exact right organization for that vision.”
