The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute in Boston issued a statement Wednesday evening saying it was “shattered” by the mass shooting during a Catholic school Mass in Minneapolis that killed two elementary school children.
“Our hearts are shattered by today’s murders in a place of sanctity and sanctuary. Spoken words are inadequate on a day such as this. Rather, we speak through our hearts to the victims, their families who love them, and the community that nurtured them,” the institute said in a statement.
Seventeen people, including 14 children, were injured in the morning shooting at Church of the Annunciation, where students from the parish school were attending Mass to mark the opening of a new school year.
The two children who died were ages 8 and 10 and the 14 students injured ranged in age from 6 to 15, the Associated Press reported.
The Louis D. Brown Peace Institute is named for the 15-year-old killed in the crossfire of a shooting in Dorchester in 1993.
Its mission is to promote non-violence and to provide resources for the survivors of homicide victims.
“We mourn with those who have suffered such unimaginable loss from this act. Their pain is our pain, their tears are our tears, and we pray devoutly that someday healing may come,” the institute said.
