Toni Braxton finally put the marriage rumors to rest and she did it on her own terms.
The songbird sat down with Entertainment Tonight’s Kevin Frazier and he asked if she was married and Braxton exhaled and said, “I am.”
The confirmation comes with context. Braxton said she and Birdman deliberately kept their relationship private and recently marked a year of marriage away from headlines. She said the secrecy was freedom, explaining, “If they don’t know, then it’s nothing to talk about. You get to live your life a little freer,” Braxton said.
She also addressed the avalanche of tabloid speculation, including reports that Braxton was set to receive a 9-figure payout after having been with Birdman for less than a month.
“I heard a lot of different rumors,” Braxton started. Frazier mentioned the non-existent $160 million come-up rumor and Braxton said,“I heard that too.”
To set the record straight on how their relationship evolved, she said, “We’ve been friends forever, for 25 years, before I had my kids. We were just buddies. Like nothing. Like romance from friendship.”
Making it plain that she and Birdman have a marriage that was bred from a longtime friendship was central to the “He Wasn’t Man Enough” singer’s retort. The lovebirds’ connection wasn’t a sudden tabloid romance and certainly not the basis for that rumored jaw-dropping breakup payout narrative.
For once and for all, Braxton gave fans the clearest account of her relationship status that’s grounded in privacy, intentionality, and longevity. Cheers to the happy couple on celebrating one year of wedded bliss!
