Vijay’s Tamil Nadu rally turns deadly: A huge campaign rally by Tamil actor-turned-politician Vijay’s event, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) turned deadly on Saturday, September 27. In the evening, the sudden increase in the number of people who attended it led to massive chaos. This left 31 dead and about 40 injured in Karur district in the western part of the state. According to the district administration, the incident was referred to as a “stampede-like crush”. It had taken place at Velusamypuram on the Karur–Erode highway. This is where many had collected in huge numbers for Vijay’s ‘Velicham Veliyeru’ campaign meeting. The star was addressing the huge gathering when it turned chaotic and he had to reportedly stop it.
How did Vijay’s rally in Karur turn deadly?
According to reports, a few people had fainted when the number of people who attended the rally had suddenly surged. This further led to a stampede. A senior police officer had reportedly estimated that the gathering saw the presence of about 30,000. At the venue, Vijay was scheduled to address the gathering following his earlier rally in Namakkal.
What did Vijay do when the crowds swelled? As the crowd surged, several event workers and children fainted. This prompted Vijay to stop his address. The actor-turned-politician asked the crowd to be calm. He also urged his supporters to make way for emergency ambulances to those who needed it the most.
What was Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin’s reaction?
Following the tragic incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin took to social media to share his reaction. He referred to the reports from Karur “worrying” and confirmed that he had asked officials to provide immediate medical care. Stalin also mentioned that he spoke to Senthil Balaji, Health Minister Subramanian, the district collector and senior police officials. Minister Anbil Mahesh was also instructed to offer assistance from nearby Tiruchirappalli.
