Boston also picked up a game on on the division leading Toronto Blue Jays and is today five games back of the AL East lead with eight games left.
Starter Garrett Crochet got tagged early in Friday’s win, but he settled after allowing 1 run in each of the first three innings and finished the game with only four hits allowed over six with nine strikeouts.
The Red Sox jumped into the lead in the leading of the seventh thanks to a Jarren Duran 2-run homer, putting Crochet in position to get his 17th win of the season, and thanks to a 7-run eighth inning the result was all but assured. Tampa Bay managed to get 4 across in the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.
