Veteran Kannada theatre personality Dr. Yashwant Sardeshpande passed away in Bengaluru on September 29, 2025, at the age of 62. He was a renowned filmmaker and theatre professional who made significant contributions to Kannada theater, television, and film.
Dr. Yashwant Sardeshpande, a veteran of Kannada theatre and film, passed away on Monday morning after suffering a heart attack. He was only 60 years old. He suddenly experienced chest pain around 10 a.m. and was immediately rushed to Fortis Hospital in Bengaluru, but could not survive. The news of his passing has sent shockwaves across Karnataka. Members of the theatre, film, and cultural circles have described the loss as irreparable.
Who is Dr. Yashwant Sardeshpande?
Yashwant Sardeshpande was born on June 13, 1965, at a hospital in Vijayapura. He completed his primary education at Kendriya Vidyalaya and New English School in Hubballi. He later completed an apprenticeship at Kirloskar College and a diesel mechanic course at the KSRTC depot. However, his passion for theatre inspired him to pursue a career in theatre. In 1985-86, he learned theatre at the Neenesam Institute in Heggodu and directed plays and serials for All India Radio and Doordarshan.
During his long career, he left his mark not only on stage but also on screen. His famous plays include All the Best, Rashichakra, Olave Jeevan Interview, Hingadre Dot Comedy, and Ninanaadre Naninena. Many of these plays have been performed hundreds of times and have even been staged abroad, including in the United States, Bahrain, Qatar, and Muscat. He also acted in films like Marma, Amritadhare, and Ram Shyam Bhama, and distinguished himself by writing dialogues in the North Karnataka dialect.
Yashwant Sardeshpande served as the professional theatre director of Rangayana and founded the Adiranga Theatre School in Hubballi. He gave a new direction to Kannada art and culture and was a source of inspiration for young artists.
